The Horizons' team of Christchurch training providers combines the skills and experience of training and development consultants, facilitators, and leading outdoor professionals. We have worked with a broad range of organisations in New Zealand and overseas, as front line staff, team leaders and senior managers. This mix of training, team leadership, and management experience enables us to identify well with our clients, their needs and requirements, and helps us to provide a practical approach to programme design and delivery.

Mark Smith - Managing Director

Mark has many years of experience as a training consultant, facilitator and business manager. He has worked for leading training organisations in New Zealand and overseas, and has extensive management experience in the snow sport, recreation and adventure industries. Mark's entrepreneurial spirit and focus have been instrumental in the development of Horizons Unlimited Ltd since 1995.
Recognised as a specialist in experiential learning methodology, Mark is interested in the design and delivery of training interventions that have a lasting effect and make an impact on individual and/or organisational performance.
Mark'srecent work focus has been in the field of safety management in the adventure tourism and outdoor industry. His is considered one of New Zealands leading outdoor industry Safety Auditors and Consultants.
Hilary Cave - Operations Manager

Hilary has spent many years working in the front line in the Adventure Tourism industry, working as a glacier and ski guide, ski patroller and walking tour guide. More recently she has guided and instructed in Antarctica.
The six years Hilary spent as operations manager at one of the South Island's busiest Adventure Tourism operators strengthened her interest in organisations and how they can run smoothly and be successful. In 2005 Hilary moved to the Horizons team of Christchurch training providers. This has allowed her to explore a new combination of her extensive outdoor skills with her organisational experience.

As and Adventure Educator and Outdoor Guide, Drew has worked in a wide range of programmes in Australia, Wales, South Africa, Vietnam and New Zealand. In the Adventure Education field he has worked extensively in both secondary and tertiary programmes involving adventure based learning, team building, climbing, abseiling, rafting, kayaking and hiking expeditions. |
In 2006 he lead fifteen students on a World Challenge Expedition to Vietnam. On this month long trip students undertook a remote wilderness trek and participated in cultural and community service activities.
Drew worked several seasons for Full On New Zealand’s Abseil operation in Wales as the Safety Training Officer. This responsibility included training and monitoring of staff, and saw the safe descent of over 4000 abseilers each season.
In 2008 Drew joined Horizons Unlimited as an Adventure Leader Programme Tutor. His depth of outdoor leadership experience and ability to facilitate groups of young people has added a great deal of value to this programme. In 2010 Drew developed and lead the 12 week Semester 2 or (Winter) GAP Year.
A St Johns Ambulance Volunteer, Drew is currently studying for a National Diploma of
Ambulance Practice He is also a valued member of Horizons PHEC delivery team.
Gemma Parkin

Gemma has worked as an Outdoor Instructor for ten years. She has held positions at Boyle River Outdoor Education Centre, Rock and Ice and Full On New Zealand. She has a thorough and professional approach, often displaying wisdom beyond her years.
At Horizons Unlimited, Gemma leads the busy Adventure Education team.
She organises and instructs on a wide variety Adventure Education Programmes for local schools and administers the Christchurch Ropes course.
As a Search and Rescue volunteer, Gemma often spends the weekend in the bush. Her interest in Search and Rescue and delivery expertise has also lead to tutoring groups in this field.
